  • Build a strong password

    Updated: 2010-03-19 20:59:26
Does your password look anything like these? 123456 porsche firebird rosebud password If so, it’s time to consider a change. These are among the top 20 most-used passwords on Twitter. If you try to sign up for an account using one of them, Twitter will stop you and require a tougher one. In fact, these are weak passwords for any online account. The strongest passwords mix upper- and lower-case letters, and use numbers and symbols. They should be a minimum of eight characters. Avoid words you can find in a dictionary, unless you’re breaking them up in the middle with a number, for example, hO27usEs!. Twitter measures the strength of your password as you enter it during sign-up. For other sites, try the Password Meter, which rates the complexity of your password and scores its strength from 0 to 100. The example above, hO27usEs! ranked very strong. —Donna Tapellini

  • 18 Apple product alternatives

    Updated: 2010-03-19 18:20:00
There are three kinds of people in this world: people who love and own Apple products; people who love but can't afford Apple products; and people who—for whatever reason—absolutely loathe anything branded with the fruit. Here's something for the latter two groups. PCMag has compiled a list of 18 Apple product alternatives, from phones to media players to laptops. Apple-lovers may turn up their noses at the selection, but others will find a number of respectable devices, often with lower pricetags. Added bonus for ConsumerReports.org subscribers: We've tested many of PCMag's suggested products (in addition to all the Apples). See how they fared in our Ratings of MP3 players/portable media players, laptop Ratings, desktop Ratings, and smart phone Ratings. Got any other Apple alternatives to share? —Nick K. Mandle

Here's the basic idea : Avoid placing your subjects in the dead center of the picture . Instead , if your digital camera has this feature , turn on its grid setting on your LCD so that you see a Tic-Tac-Toe pattern . Then , line your subject up on one of the four spots where the vertical and horizontal lines cross each of these spots is roughly located 1 3 of the way from the top to the bottom and from the left to the right side of the frame hence , the term rule of thirds Doing this , instead of placing the subject directly in the center of the frame , usually improves the aesthetics of your image .
